Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands is an integrate resort complex located in front of Marina Bay in Singapore. The complex is developed by Las Vegas Sands and is considered as the world’s most expensive standalone casino property today, costing around S$ 8 billion. It is characterized by a three-tower complex topped by a 340-meter long SkyPark. In such a short span of time, it has established itself as one of the more iconic buildings in the small prosperous Asian city-state.

Marina Bay Sands History

Marina Bay Sands was a result of a winning proposal to build two of Singapore’s planned integrated resorts, one in Marina Bay and with the other one to be built in Sentosa. These proposals aimed to help meet Singapore’s economic and tourism goals for the next decade. Bidders came in to provide their proposals, which were then assessed on a variety of factors. Las Vegas Sands won the proposal for the Marina Bay site on May 27, 2006.

Las Vegas Sands initially invested S$ 3.85 billion to the project, excluding the S$ 1.2 billion cost of the site. Construction of the resort was in no means smooth as Las Vegas Sands faced many challenges along the way such as escalating costs of materials as well as labor shortages because of other property development projects in the country. The cost of the project eventually ballooned up to S$ 8 billion, making it the most expensive standalone integrated resort property in the world today.

The Marina Bay Sands eventually had a grand opening on February 15, 2011 after a preview opening on April 27, 2010 of its casino and an official opening of its resort and SkyPark on June 23, 2010. The complex was designed by Israeli/Canadian architect Moshe Safdie. The engineering phase was handled by Arup and Parsons Brinkerhoff.

Marina Bay Sands Features

The Marina Bay Sands was designed initially inspired by card decks. This is seen by the SkyPark topping off the three hotel towers and connecting them. The hotel towers stands 55 stories and topped off by a 1-hectare sky terrace called the Sands SkyPark. In front of the three imposing hotel towers lay the Casino Block, the Theatre Block and the Convention and Exhibition Block. The lotus shaped structure constructed next to then is the ArtScience Museum.

The SkyPark contains the world’s longest elevated swimming pool. Stretching 146 meters or 478 feet long, the swimming pool with an infinity edge is situated 191 meters above ground. The casino houses the world’s largest atrium casino. Other attractions in the resort include The Shoppes Marina Bay Sands mall, two floating Crystal Pavilions as well as the Sands Theatre and the Grand Theatre for live performances and concerts.
