Cayan Tower
Cayan Tower is a super tall skyscraper located in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. It was also previously called as the Infinity Tower. Inaugurated on June 10, 2013, this primarily residential skyscraper is currently the world’s tallest twisting tower. It is characterized by its twisting structure that creates a shape of a helix.
Cayan Tower History
The Cayan Tower was recently inaugurated and opened to the public this June 2013. The tower first began construction sometime in February of 2006. But it went through several delays. Construction on the site halted sometime in February of 2007 due to flooding on the foundation site. It was caused by a serious breach in the wall that held back the water of the Dubai Marina. Repairs on the wall delayed the construction of the tower for a year and a half. Construction resumed on July 2008. Eventually, the Cayan Tower was topped off in 2012.
Cayan Tower Profile
The Cayan Tower was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the same firm that designed the Burj Khalifa, currently the tallest building in the world. The Cayan Tower stands 306 meters or 1,004 feet high. It has 80 floors composed of 495 residential apartments along with building amenities such as tennis courts, conference rooms, a gym, swimming pools as well as a nursery and a spa. The complex also includes a 5-storey parking garage constructed behind the tower.
The Cayan Tower comes with a unique twisting tower design. The structure twists from the ground up and achieves a full 90-degree spiral, creating a helix-like profile. It has a similar design structure to the Turning Torso located in Malmo, Sweden. However, the method of achieving the twist in the structure was done differently.
The Turning Torso is composed of a series of cantilevered plates that rotates around a straight structure. The Cayan Tower, on the other hand, actually requires the whole structure to twist as it is constructed level by level. Each floor is rotated 1.2 degrees in order to achieve the full 90-degree spiral. The twisted design profile also aims to help reduce the effect of the powerful wind forces that affects many of the skyscrapers in Dubai. Cayan Tower is also equipped with a perforated metal panels made out of titanium to prevent the penetrating glare of the sun from disturbing the building residents. For its size, the Cayan Tower is known as the tallest building in the world with a twist of 90 degrees.
